Cure for Hangry = Picky Bars

Posted by kari on Sun, Jun 7, 2020

I don’t actually get hangry very often. I sometimes get run-gry (I’ve been running a lot and could eat anything in sight), and I sometimes get sad-gry (I don’t realize I’m hungry and become convinced everything is hopeless). Since I don’t eat gluten or dairy, finding a snack in a pinch can be a challenge. I keep snacks in my car, my husband’s car, my purse, and my gym bag. Favorite running solution: Picky Bars.

Picky Bars are amazing. They were invented by professional athletes, intentionally free of common food allergens, and are designed to give you that key carbohydrate to protein ratio you need post exercise. They are also super portable, fit in my pockets, and are easier to eat than a banana and almond butter when you are dashing from the track to work. I have found them easy on my sensitive stomach post workout, even on the hard days.

Right now my favorite flavor is Cinnamon Roll’n. I am a sucker for cinnamon in general, and since I often eat this after a morning run it seems like an appropriate breakfast food. I also love the Smooth Caffeinator. I appreciate that the flavors come in a variety of textures, so I don’t get bored. Need for Seed is crunchy, because it really does contain seeds. Lauren’s Mega Nuts has more chunks.

I’ve been really impressed with this brand. The owners (and pro athletes), Jesse Thomas, Lauren Fleshman, and Steph Bruce have a great message. I’ve heard them interviewed and listened to their awesome podcast, and I honestly believe they care about producing a quality product that is genuinely allergen free. I’ve also been impressed by how they talk about building a business that cares as much about community as the bottom line. I also like supporting businesses based in the Pacific Northwest.

Shopping tips: I have had an easy time finding these in stock at REI stores for $2.50. They usually offer a 10% discount if you are buying 10 or more. You also get back 10% as part of the membership dividend. If you are interested in trying these out, just want a couple of bars, and you live near an REI, I think this is the best option ($2.50 each and 10% back if you are a member). You can also order a variety pack from Amazon of 4 bars for about $11 ($2.75 each, but if you order this via subscribe and save it is $10.44 ($2.61 per bar). The most frugal way to buy Picky Bars is to join the Picky Club. You can schedule exactly what you want and how often you want to get it. If you spend $25 you get 10% off, $45 you get 20% off, $65 you get 30%. I get 20 bars every three months, so each bar is $2.20. If you decide to join the Picky Club, send me an email at referral.pickybar@hackyourrun.com, and I’ll send you a code for $10 off.

I’ll admit these bars are a little more expensive than the run of the mill ones. I am a cheapskate, but I believe in voting with your spending money. You can tell that I believe in this company and also find these bars truly tasty.
