A Hug for Your Feet

I got my first pair of Birkenstocks in the fourth grade. I was having problems with my feet and ankles, and a podiatrist recommended giving them a try. I distinctly remember going to the Birkenstock store in downtown Portland, Oregon to pick them out. I remember that they were roomy enough for my feet and way more comfortable than the leg braces I had also tried. I also remember the reaction of my fourth grade teacher “wow….those almost look like Birkenstocks.” I have had a lot of years to come to terms with caring more about how my feet feel than what people think of how my shoes look. Besides, now they come in metallic!

Another big improvement since the 1980s is the soft footbed. This footbed doesn’t require nearly as much breakin as the original version. I think it’s the perfect combination of firm support and a little bit of give. The generous layer of cork in the footbed lets the shoe mold to your feet. My favorite style is the Arizona, which has the classic two leather straps with buckles. I think it has just enough adjustability. When I finish a long run or a long day at the office, these shoes make my feet feel great. I also wear Birkenstock lace up shoes and boots.

If you haven’t worn Birkenstocks before, it’s best to be fitted for them by a pro. Birkenstocks follow european sizing and come in widths that I don’t think really correlate to traditional widths. Authorized retailers have inside knowledge on getting an ideal fit.

Frugal tips: it’s worth paying extra when you get service with your purchase. If you get help choosing your first Birkenstocks, I encourage you to pay full price. Birkenstocks are often imitated and sold online as genuine. Please patronize Birkenstock stores and authorized retailers. You can find Birkenstocks at Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack, often on sale. I have also purchased glittery Birkenstocks from J.Crew, though they are often excluded from promotions you can earn points with the J.Crew loyalty program. I have several pairs of Birkenstocks from Saks Fifth Avenue, using one of the credits from the American Express Platinum Card. Road Runner Sports carries a few Birkenstocks, and if you are a member you can get 10% off and 10% back.
